What is the Interim Federal Health Program?
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides free temporary health care to eligible refugees and protected persons in Canada who lack provincial health insurance. It covers mental health services, medical exams, urgent care, and prescription drugs, ensuring newcomers get necessary medical care while waiting for permanent coverage.

Get Started TodayTo qualify for the program, you must be in one of the following groups:
- Resettled Refugees: People who have been selected abroad and brought to Canada to live as permanent residents.
- Protected Persons: Individuals who have been granted asylum in Canada.
- Refugee Claimants: People who have applied for refugee status from within Canada and are waiting for a decision.
In most cases, you don’t need to apply for Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) coverage. Your immigration status determines your eligibility and your coverage is activated or cancelled automatically. You may need to apply online if you believe you’re eligible but your claim was rejected.
